I first discovered the joys of Pilates in the early nineties when I went along to a fully equipped studio with some dancer friends. I walked into a small room filled with a few odd looking machines that had ropes, pulleys and springs occupied by very capable, extremely lithe, fit dancer types. I felt slightly intimidated but it was too late to back out as the teacher immediately got me onto the reformer and we started off with some plies.
Brilliant! Horizontal ballet! I was hooked immediately as the repetitions were low so it never became boring. The exercises had memorable names; snake, elephant, cat, mermaid. Movements were adapted to my strengths and weaknesses so I came away from every session feeling that I had accomplished something new and perhaps I too would become as adept as those dancers that I saw on day one.
Despite subsequently doing a dance degree I remain a terrible dancer to this day! It is Pilates that gives my body strength and flexibility and a better sense of movement, poise and agility. It is pilates that focuses my mind and pilates that allows me to relax. I discovered group classes and classic matwork Pilates which enabled me to practice at home and in 2003 I trained and qualified with Body Control Pilates and have been teaching as FWD>pilates ever since.
For me teaching is an absolute pleasure. The benefits of Pilates are quickly evident and I would like to think that my clients keep coming back as they too recognise their progress, manage their condition or simply experience the pleasure of performing Pilates at any level.
I am a fully qualified Body Control teacher with qualifications in Matwork and studio equipment (Reformer, Cadillac and Ladder Barrel). I have taken courses in Swiss Ball Pilates as well as a number of courses using small equipment and I continue learning with weekly classes as well as workshops led by international teachers.
To further develop the healing side of my practice I am currently training to be a Shiatsu practitioner.
In January 2012 I completed the Pink Ribbon Program and qualified in Post-Rehabilitative Breast Cancer Pilates. Offering strength and improved quality of life whether your surgery is recent or years ago, the Pink Ribbon Program is tailored to help women regain full movement in affected areas.
I am a qualified First Aider.
